Sometimes I wonder how the world would be if I was the size of an insect
Sometimes I wonder what the world would look like if I was the size of an insect, like in the story of ‘Eric’ (by Godfried Bomans). It must be really fascinating to see the world from another angle. Flowers will be trees if you are the size of an insect. As a child, I didn’t know Godfried Bomans, so Paul Biegel’s story “The Little Captain” fed my imagination. Especially the chapter where the children reach the island of ‘Big and Growth’.
“[…] They explored, because before you go to sleep on an uninhabited island, you should first know whether it is really uninhabited. That’s what the Little Captain said, and he led the way. They found trees as tall as church towers, flowers as big as deck chairs and shells you could live in. […]” (from “De Kleine Kapitein”, by Paul Biegel)
The atmosphere and appearance of the artwork are, as with a real landscape, strongly influenced by the incidence of (sun) light. If you are interested in the text used, you can read it in the Journal on this website.
The sheet metal texts are difficult to capture in the photo. They are therefore not clearly visible on these photos. You are always welcome to come and see the painting in real life in the studio. The changing incidence of light during the day ensures that the texts stand out more or less. This changes the painting during the course of the day.

Soms vraag ik me af hoe de wereld eruit zou zien als ik zo groot was als een insect, zoals in het verhaal van ‘Eric’ (door Godfried Bomans). Het moet echt fascinerend zijn om de wereld vanuit een andere hoek te zien. Bloemen zullen bomen zijn als je zo groot bent als een insect. Als kind kende ik Godfried Bomans niet, dus Paul Biegel‘s verhaal “De Kleine kapitein“ voedde mijn verbeelding. Vooral het hoofdstuk waar de kinderen het eiland “Groot en Groei” bereiken.
“[…] Ze gingen op verkenning, want vóór je gaat slapen op een onbewoond eiland, moet je eerst weten of het echt onbewoond is. Dat zei de kleine kapitein, en hij ging voorop. Ze vonden bomen zo hoog als kerktorens, bloemen zo groot als ligstoelen en schelpen waar je in kon wonen. […]” (uit “De Kleine Kapitein”, van Paul Biegel)
De sfeer en uitstraling van het kunstwerk worden hierdoor, net als bij een echt landschap, sterk beïnvloed door inval van het (zon)licht. Indien u geïnteresseerd bent in de gebruikte tekst, dan kunt u deze lezen in het Journal op deze website.
De bladmetalen teksten zijn lastig vast te leggen op de foto. Ze zijn op deze foto’s dan ook niet goed te zien. U bent altijd welkom om het schilderij in het echt te komen bekijken in het atelier. De veranderende lichtinval gedurende de dag zorgt ervoor dat de teksten meer of juist minder opvallen. Hierdoor verandert het schilderij gedurende de loop van de dag.
