This painting reflects on Doggerland, the vast land that once connected Britain to continental Europe before it disappeared beneath the rising seas. This drowned landscape speaks not only of ancient history but also of our present time. Rising sea levels and climate change once again threaten coastlines, echoing the fate of this forgotten land. The work is layered with text in silver foil, ink, acrylic markers, and screen print. Words shimmer and fade depending on the light, just as memory and history shift between presence and absence. The reflective surfaces act like water: sometimes concealing, sometimes revealing. For me, Doggerland embodies both resilience and fragility. It was once a fertile corridor of life, later drowned by the unstoppable sea. In my work, I revisit this lost world not as a reconstruction, but as a mirror. What is drowned may return as a warning.

Through this painting, I invite viewers to consider the landscapes we live in today: What will remain visible, and what stories will sink beneath the waves?

Poetry of Rivers

Between the Dutch coast and Great Britain lies a vast, vanished landscape: Doggerland. This extraordinary region, now submerged beneath the North Sea, was, for most of the past million years, a sweeping expanse of fertile land. At its heart flowed mighty rivers—ancient, untamed arteries of life. These rivers, the forebears of the Rhine, Meuse, Seine, and Thames, carved deep valleys into the earth, their waters weaving together to form one of the greatest deltas the world has ever known.

Along these monumental rivers roamed mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses, their heavy footsteps echoing across the floodplains. Neanderthals hunted in their shadow, crafting tools and stories on the banks of these ceaseless waterways. Later, the ancestors of modern humans followed, drawn to the rivers’ abundance and vitality.

Doggerland’s rivers were lifelines, carving paths through the icy tundra and breathing warmth into an otherwise harsh and unforgiving land. During the coldest glacial peaks, when ice encased the earth, their flow was stilled, yet in warmer interludes, they returned, roaring with renewed vigor. Their waters transformed the barren plains into lush oases where life flourished. Along their banks, grasses swayed in the wind, feeding great herds of reindeer, horses, and steppe bison. The rivers were not just landscapes; they were storytellers, shaping the lives of the creatures and people who depended on them.

One valley in particular was central to Doggerland’s story. A delta where the ancient Rhine, Meuse, Seine, and Thames rivers converged into a mighty waterway. Here, the rivers carved a green and fertile sanctuary, a place of abundance even in the depths of winter. When the rivers froze, they awaited the spring thaw, bursting forth in floods that nourished the land. Plants grew thick along the riverbanks, drawing grazers and hunters alike to this life-giving corridor. Further away from the rivers, the land grew colder, starker, and less forgiving.

As time passed, the rivers bore witness to the arrival of modern humans. About 11,000 years ago, as the last Ice Age gave way to the warmer Holocene epoch, the rivers welcomed new settlers. The waters rose steadily, transforming the plains into wetlands rich with fish, birds, and game. Yet, even as these rivers continued to sustain life, they also heralded its end.

Doggerland’s rivers, once mighty and eternal, could not hold back the rising seas. Slowly, the delta turned to marshes, and the marshes became open water. The rivers that had shaped this world for millennia disappeared beneath the waves, their stories now buried in the depths of the North Sea.

Yet, their legacy endures. For those who gaze upon the sea today, it is not merely water they see but a world shaped by the power and poetry of rivers—those great, eternal forces that have always defined the land and its people.
