The Dutch coast is on the edge of a huge drowned land: Doggerland. Due to global warming, more and more ice melted further north and slowly but surely the area was flooded. About 8,000 years ago, the water stopped at the precursors of our current beaches. The Dutch writer Thomas Olde Heuvelt refers in his book ‘Orakel‘ to this drowned land and the disappeared animals that inhabited this land. An ancient mammoth god plays an important role in the story. This inspired me to paint this mammoth. Text fragments from the book that inspired me are woven into the artwork.
