In the series Fabled Creatures, I explore the symbolism and expressive power of animals as they appear in books, myths, and literary tales. Each animal is not merely a figure from nature but a character full of meaning — a metaphor, a guide, a mirror for human emotions and desires.
The paintings depict animals not in a strictly realistic way, but rather in a serene, poetic style. They hover between recognition and abstraction, often set in undefined landscapes or within a nearly dreamlike emptiness. The painting techniques range from transparent layers to stronger brushstrokes and reflective elements such as metallic foil.
Text plays a subtle role in this series: fragments of stories, quotes, or names are integrated into the image, sometimes visible, sometimes hidden within the painting’s structure. These words refer to the sources of inspiration — from fables and novels to classical literature — adding an extra layer of meaning to the animals.
Fabled Creatures is an ode to the rich tradition of storytelling where animals are more than their form. They carry wisdom, mystery, and imagination — qualities that I try to capture and brings to life on canvas.
Some artworks are inspired by archeological descriptions. Others are inspired by a legend I wrote or the book ‘Orakel‘, written by the Dutch writer Thomas Olde Heuvelt. You can read more about my inspiration when you click on the artworks.
