Local artist inspires NYC componist – Waddinxveen
Either she has very good connections, her work stands out or she does something else very well; 45-year-old Elise Eekhout is making good progress as an artist with a studio in the former Bethel school on the Heggewinde in Waddinxveen and even manages to stand out abroad.

“It can’t be connections, I started from scratch and have only recently become involved in the art world. I quickly realized that you have to post something on social media every day. For ten months I talked about my paintings, why I did something and what my inspiration was”. It certainly stood out. An art curator from India discovered her through Instagram and recently she managed to inspire a pianist/composer from New York.
But first about Eekhout itself. Before entering the professional art world in 2020, she had been a graphic designer for over 20 years. She started her own design agency during her studies at the St. Joost art academy in Breda. At the beginning of the corona time, Eekhout decided to follow her passion and become a professional artist. It did her no harm. Partly due to a slick website and activities via social media, she managed to get herself into ‘the picture’.
Thanks to the art curator from India, she made a breakthrough already a year after starting as an independent artist with various exhibitions in India. Soon after, she caught the attention of Singulart, an online gallery based in Paris. Unfortunately for her, Eekhout’s solo exhibition in Spijkenisse had to be postponed due to corona, but now her art has been noticed by Margin Alexander, a New York City-based composer and pianist.
Concert
Eekhout’s work intrigued him to such an extent that he wants to use her as a source of inspiration for his next concert on 21 December; ‘December, a Blank Canvas to my Piano’.
Alexander is a composer and pianist who has since performed many concerts, makes film scores, accompanies world-famous artists and gives recitals all over the world. His work is shared both digitally and live. The composer has invited artists from all over the world to be part of his music exhibition.
Under the direction of his shape and color synesthesia, he will perform ten original pieces from New York, inspired by personally selected works of art. The painting by the Dutch Elise Eekhout is therefore one of them.
The virtual concert will be streamed live in HD from New York, so it can be viewed from every corner of the world. The artworks are projected onto a screen as the composer introduces the artist and the artwork, then performs the original music dedicated to each artwork. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.com. The event will take place on December 21 and will last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Books
Eekhout is of course very happy that her paintings stand out from others. All her paintings are colorful and covered with letters made of leaf metal. “For me, every painting is linked to a book. I love to read and am inspired while reading.”
She points to a painting with a large red dot with Japanese characters on it, which can be seen when you get closer. “This work is inspired by Bezonken Rood by Jeroen Brouwers. I take a fragment from a book and process it with a kind of dip pen with glue and write down the fragment that, for example, really touched me. Then after so many hours it is covered with leaf metal and I remove everything that does not stick with a brush. An intensive job, absolutely.”

“Connecties kunnen het niet zijn, ik ben uit het niets begonnen en zit pas sinds kort in de kunstwereld. Ik had wel al snel door dat je elke dag iets moet posten op social media. Ik heb tien maanden lang verteld over mijn schilderijen, waarom ik iets deed en wat mijn inspiratie was”. Het viel zeker op. Een kunstcurator uit India ontdekte haar via Instagram en onlangs heeft ze een pianist/componist uit New York weten te inspireren.
Maar eerst over Eekhout zelf. Voordat ze in 2020 de professionele kunstwereld betrad, was ze al meer dan 20 jaar grafisch ontwerper. Eekhout’s solo-expositie in Spijkenisse moest, helaas voor haar, worden uitgesteld wegens corona, maar nu is haar kunst opgemerkt door Margin Alexander, een in New York City gevestigde componist en pianist.
Concert
Het werk van Eekhout intrigeerde hem dusdanig dat hij haar wil gebruiken als inspiratiebron voor zijn eerstvolgende concert op 21 december; ‘December, a Blank Canvas to my Piano’.
Alexander is een componist en pianist die inmiddels veel concerten op zijn naam heeft staan, filmmuziek maakt, wereldberoemde artiesten begeleidt en recitals houdt over de hele wereld. Zijn werk wordt zowel digitaal als live gedeeld. De componist heeft kunstenaars van over de hele wereld uitgenodigd om deel uit te maken van zijn muziektentoonstelling.
Onder leiding van zijn vorm en kleur synthesie zal hij vanuit New York een tiental originele stukken ten gehore brengen, geïnspireerd op persoonlijk geselecteerde kunstwerken. Het schilderij van de Nederlandse Elise Eekhout is er daar dus één van.
Het virtuele concert wordt live gestreamd in HD vanuit New York, zodat het vanuit elke hoek van de wereld is te bekijken. De kunstwerken worden op een scherm geprojecteerd terwijl de componist de kunstenaar en het kunstwerk introduceert en vervolgens de originele muziek uitvoert die aan elk kunstwerk is gewijd. Tickets zijn verkrijgbaar via Eventbrite.com. Het evenement vind plaats op 21 december en duurt ongeveer 1 uur en 15 minuten.
Boeken
Dat haar schilderijen opvallen bij anderen, maakt Eekhout uiteraard blij. Al haar schilderijen zijn kleurrijk en beplakt met letters van bladmetaal. “Voor mij is elk schilderij verbonden aan een boek. Ik lees ontzettend graag en word tijdens het lezen geïnspireerd.”
Ze wijst naar een schilderij waar een grote rode stip op staat met Japanse tekens erop, te zien als je dichterbij staat. “Dit werk is geïnspireerd op Bezonken Rood van Jeroen Brouwers. Ik pak een fragment uit een boek en verwerk dit met een soort kroontjespen met lijm en schrijf het fragment over dat me bijvoorbeeld erg heeft geraakt. Vervolgens wordt het na zoveel uur met bladmetaal bedekt en haal ik met een kwast alles weg wat niet blijft plakken. Een intensief karweitje, absoluut.”
