An artist on instagram drew my attention to a super cool project: The Colorfield Performance by Dirk Hakze in Park Lingezegen in Elst in The Netherlands.
The Colorfield Performance is becoming a known name in the visual arts. This is a large Land-Art project, in which monumental designer and visual artist Dirk Hakze collaborates with other artists. The idea behind this is that from a common concept individual contributions flow together into one large colorful unit. This makes it possible to create large works of art that form a powerful marker in the landscape.
Every Wednesday till Sunday 6 other artists work on the project. I made my contribution on July 9th.
I’m so happy when I see all those colors. Together with 5 other artists I was allowed to paint a panel for The Colorfield Performance and I had an amazing day. It was a hard job to make such a big painting in 1 day, but I was in good company: Hera van den Heuvel, Leny Meulendijks, Yvonne Wittebrood, Dik Kusters and Wim Mecking.
The participants come from many different countries: the Netherlands, France, Hungary, Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, New Zealand, Spain, Curaçao, Scotland, Nigeria, Italy, Turkey, United States, Belgium, Syria and Poland.
It’s difficult to make a painting this big in one day. Luckily the weather was really good. Lots of sunshine, but not too hot. For me this was a convenience, because I work in layers. The first layer has to be dry before I can paint the next layer
Of course I also wrote in this painting. I had to use other materials though. Because the painting has to be outside for a couple of months I couldn’t use the leaf metal.
Instead of leaf metal I used acrylic paint. I had never done this before, but it worked really well. It doen’t have the shine and shimmer of leaf metal, but it’s still fascinating.
Because the writing takes a lot of time, I was still working while the other artists were cleaning up and left to go home. But it’s a technic that can’t be rushed. So I worked steadily until the painting was finished.
I really love the details. Perhaps I will be using acrylic paint to write the texts more often.
I used the landscape of Park Lingezegen as an inspiration for this painting. The texts I used in this painting are quotes from the book ‘Ontsnapte Land’ by Geert Mak. They fit perfectly with the landscape.
I had the best day ever!

Een kunstenaar op instagram vestigde mijn aandacht op een super gaaf project: The Colorfield Performance van Dirk Hakze in Park Lingezegen in Elst.
De Colorfield Performance wordt een begrip in de beeldende kunst. Dit is een groot Land-Art project, waarin monumentaal ontwerper en beeldend kunstenaar Dirk Hakze samenwerkt met andere kunstenaars. Het idee hierachter is dat vanuit een gemeenschappelijk concept individuele bijdragen samenvloeien tot één grote kleurrijke eenheid. Hierdoor is het mogelijk om grote kunstwerken te maken die een krachtige markering in het landschap vormen.
Elke woensdag t/m zondag werken 6 andere kunstenaars aan het project. Ik heb mijn bijdrage geleverd op 9 juli.
Ik word zo blij als ik al die kleuren zie. Samen met 5 andere kunstenaars mocht ik een paneel schilderen voor The Colorfield Performance en ik had een geweldige dag. Het was een hele klus om in 1 dag zo’n groot schilderij te maken, maar ik was in goed gezelschap: Hera van den Heuvel, Leny Meulendijks, Yvonne Wittebrood, Dik Kusters en Wim Mecking.
De deelnemers komen uit veel verschillende landen: Nederland, Frankrijk, Hongarije, Rusland, Zwitserland, Oostenrijk, Duitsland, Nieuw-Zeeland, Spanje, Curaçao, Schotland, Nigeria, Italië, Turkije, Verenigde Staten, België, Syrië en Polen.
Het is moeilijk om in één dag zo’n groot schilderij te maken. Gelukkig was het weer echt goed. Veel zon, maar niet te warm. Voor mij was dit een handig, omdat ik in lagen werk. De eerste laag moet droog zijn voordat ik de volgende laag kan schilderen
Natuurlijk heb ik ook in dit schilderij geschreven. Ik moest wel ander materiaal gebruiken. Omdat het schilderij een paar maanden buiten moet staan kon ik het bladmetaal niet gebruiken.
In plaats van bladmetaal heb ik acrylverf gebruikt. Ik had dit nog nooit eerder gedaan, maar het werkte heel goed. Het heeft niet de glans van bladmetaal, maar het is nog steeds fascinerend.
Omdat het schrijven veel tijd kost, was ik nog aan het werk terwijl de andere kunstenaars aan het opruimen waren en naar huis vertrokken. Maar het is een techniek die niet gehaast kan worden. Dus werkte ik gestaag door tot het schilderij af was.
Ik hou echt van de details. Misschien ga ik vaker acrylverf gebruiken om de teksten te schrijven.
Als inspiratie voor dit schilderij heb ik het landschap van Park Lingezegen gebruikt. De teksten die ik in dit schilderij heb gebruikt zijn citaten uit het boek ‘Ontsnapte Land’ van Geert Mak. Ze passen perfect bij het landschap.
