MAKING OFAbstract Landscape

ABSTRACT LANDSCAPEInspiration

In Abstract Landscape, Elise Eekhout explores the space between landscape and imagination. Her paintings grow from stories, memories, walks through nature and places that carry a history. Rather than depicting a landscape literally, she translates an atmosphere, a thought or a fragment of a story into colour, light, texture and form.

The landscapes are often recognizable, yet remain somewhere between the figurative and the abstract. Fields of colour can suggest water, sky, land or mist, while layers and textures create a sense of depth and movement. Some paintings are quiet and atmospheric; others are more expressive and intense. What connects them is the feeling of a landscape remembered rather than simply observed.

Language is an integral part of this work. Text fragments, handwritten words and screen-printed passages are woven into the paintings, sometimes almost disappearing into the image, sometimes becoming a strong visual presence. The words may refer to a story, a place, a memory or a personal thought. They are not always meant to be read immediately. Instead, they become part of the landscape itself.

Metallic foil adds another dimension. Gold, silver and other reflective surfaces catch the changing light, causing parts of the image and text to appear or disappear as the viewer moves. What seems hidden at one moment can suddenly become visible at another.

In these works, landscape becomes more than a physical place. It becomes a space for memory, imagination and reflection—a place where stories and fragments of language can settle, emerge and transform.
